The first method to stop hiccup is done by rubbing a cotton swab on the back part of the roof of the mouth, where the hard palate joins the soft palate. This stimulation shuts down the phrenic nerve.
The second method to stop hiccup should be done with the presence of an adult. Let the patient swallow a teaspoon of dry, granulated sugar in a sucking fashion. Instruct the patient not to hold the sugar long enough for it to melt in the mouth, rather, have the patient suck it down dry, so that the granules will hit the back of the throat. This way, it would stimulate the nerves there, interrupting the spasm signals effectively.
