Another section of this blog will be called, “Nuggets of Wisdom” — a section filled with a collection of a great selection of quotes and sayings that everyone can live by and get inspired with.

I am a person who do not entirely base my life on what other people has to say, but I try to learn lessons from other people’s experiences in life. Simply because, as much as possible, I would like to avoid the same mistakes that they have done, and at the same time, learn from their success, and strive to do even better.

I am inspired by those people who have succeeded in their fields, may it be as a farmer, a scientist, a lawyer, a doctor, a man who never made a cent, and someone who made millions and even billions. Experiences are the best teachers in this life. What people did in the past, helped mold them into what they have become, and will be a big factor of what they will be in the future. And from the quotes and sayings, the legacy of those great individuals will live on.

Who are our true friends? Sometimes, we just think that there is no one whom we can truly depend on… We have a lot of friends but we have an only few true friends. Sometimes we can’t see them with many friends but we can see them lonely as a shallow river. Sometimes, we can feel their existence of needing true friends. Sometimes, we can hear their cries of being lonely or hear their real supports. Sometimes, we can feel their pats on our shoulder during on our greatest downfall on our life. Lastly, we can see their shining helping hand extending to ours and trying to catch our pale hands to bring us lightly up to life.

I’ve read a saying with this statement: “Friends are like jewels and for your friends, you are a jewel to them”. Some people don’t believe the value of true friendship because of experiences they’ve been to like being left by friends on times that they need one, fair weathered friends as we call them. There are people who lean on their friends more than their families. They care to share their secrets and deepest emotions to their friends that they could not dare to tell to their family.

Rich girl named Aime has many so- called friends in her whole life. She has lots of toys that attracted her friends attention to always play with her in front of their yard. Her life was colorful as a rainbow and she never wished for more. She saw a lonely and innocent girl sitting in a swing and trying to play with a single stalk of a tulip. She went there and asks the name of the lonely girl, “What is your name, my dear?” Then the lonely girl answered, “I have no name but I could be your friend.” Then both girls just laughed. They became good friends since then. Time came that the rich girl’s parents died in an accident and she became poor. All her toys and things were sold. Her friends went away. The only friend that was left was the lonely girl without a name.

The lonely girl got pity to Aime’s sorrow of being poor and left behind by her other friends. She decided to make her happy thus decided to sell her most precious locket and went to the antique shop. Indeed, she successfully sold it for two hundred dollars. But on her way home, while she was crossing the street, she was hit by a car and was left behind with a blood in her head. Fortunately, a man saw her and brought the girl to the hospital. Aime heard the news of what happened to her friend who has an intention to make her happy. She rushed to the hospital and saw her friend in one of the beds at Emergency room lying unconsciously. After a day of confinement, the lonely girl passed away.

“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” True friends are people who truly care for us. They stick with us through thick and thin and ever ready to cheer us up when we are down. They do not fade nor depreciate as time passes by but shines like a diamond in the long run instead. Let us appreciate their unconditional love and give importance to their existence. By the way, who is your true friend?

To all my friends out there, I love you all!

Have you heard the story about the carrot, egg, and the coffee beans? It is so inspiring and a great reminder for us if we face adversity in our lives. So, I decided to share it to you today. This may differ a bit from the original story but the thought is the same:

A daughter complained to her mother about how hard life has been for her. She did not know how she was going to endure and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling; it seemed that whenever one problem was solved, a new one takes place.

Her mother took her to the kitchen and filled three pots with water. She placed each pot on a high fire. When the water started to boil, she placed a carrot on the first pot, an egg in the second, and ground coffee beans on the last pot.

After 20 minutes, her mother turned the burners off. She took out the carrot and placed it on a bowl. She pulled the egg and placed it in a separate bowl. And then she ladled out the coffee, and poured it into another bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, “What do you see.” “A carrot, an egg and coffee,” the young woman replied.

Her mother let her take a closer look on carrot and asked her to feel it. She did and noted that it was soft. Her mother then asked her to take an egg and break it. After peeling it, she observed that it was now a hard-boiled. Finally, her mother asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled as she sniffs the inviting aroma of the coffee and enjoyed the taste of its rich flavor. Then she asked, “So, what is the point, Mom?”

Her mother explained to her that the carrot, egg, and the coffee beans faced the same adversity: boiling water. Yet, each reacted very differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting but, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile; its thin outer shell had protected the liquid part inside. But, after sitting it through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique in such a way that after being subjected to the boiling water, they changed the water. “So, which one are you?” her mother asked. When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?”

How about you? How do you handle adversity?

Are you like carrot that seems strong but when subjected to trials in life and felt pain become soft and lost its strength?

Are you like the egg that has a fluid spirit and a soft heart but after trial has come (like break up, separation, death, lay-off, financial hardship or any other trials) on the outside you look like the same but become bitter, stiff in spirit and with a hardened heart deep inside? Or,

Are you like the coffee bean that changes the hot water-that which is bringing the pain? If you are like the coffee been, when things are at their worst, you get better and make things better around you. Instead of letting the situation change you, you make it better and bring life to it instead.

Personally, this story touched my heart when I first heard it from one of my church brethren. He incorporated this story on his sermon. I have been subjected to a trial that time and been like the egg. I wish I had more patience. If only getting patience was easy as having rechargeable batteries and charger, so when I run out of it, I could easily recover and become patient again. But, thanks to this story, because since that time that I’ve first heard of it, I tried my best to be like a coffee bean after.

May all of us be like COFFEE BEANS!

Most of us may ask: What is the real worth of life? Is it million dollars, a thousand, or a penny?

The lives of kings and queens may be worth million dollars or even more, but for beggars and slaves, it could be a penny or nothing at all. Some buy gold bars and keep them in a treasure chest, to feel that they have something worth a lot. But every block of it no matter how many, still can’t measure up the real worth of life.

What is the real worth of life? Is it based on the social status of man? Why are the lives of the rich and the educated are worth higher than those of the poor and the illiterates? Why the glaring discrimination? Is life a total accumulation of what we have done with it? Or is it simply the pristine divine breath given to us freely by God?

What is the real worth of life? In our country, the law stipulates a payment of a minimum or bench amount of thirty thousand pesos as a payment for a dead man overran by a logging truck. The rationale is that it is safer and cheaper to run over a man on the road than to endanger the life of the truck driver and other lives that may result from a worse vehicular accident in case the truck driver swerves to the left or to the right to avoid the man. The truck could either hit the incoming vehicles or be bumped by the vehicles following it. Applying the brakes instantly can result to timber logs falling off to the road and can cause greater disaster.

What is the real worth of life? Has the law fully known the real worth of life by stipulating a certain amount as payment for the life of a man? How did the law computed and arrived at the minimum amount of thirty thousand pesos as the real value of life?

Of course, thirty thousand pesos is better than to have none at all. Damage to human life is done and irreversible. No amount of wranglings in the court can resurrect the dead. But if the overrunning of a man is done as the only last clear chance for the truck driver to avoid endangering his life and the lives of other men that may result from a worse accident that may result in case the timber logs fall off the road, is the bench amount of thirty thousand pesos really enough as payment for the life of man?

Thirty thousand pesos is not the real worth of life. But here on earth, we have to accept what the law says. If we refuse to accept the payment, we lose doubly. And if we insist for justice, and in anger we put the law in our own hands, we become criminals, and we can be punished and put in prison.

What is the real worth of life? In this earth, a life can be worth million dollars or even more. It can be worth thousand dollars, a penny or nothing. But to our Creator and Giver of Life, the real worth of life is priceless. Its value is more than all the golds and silvers and all the treasures on this earth.

What are the Health Benefits, Source, and Dosage of Vitamin B6 ?

The body needs vitamins to function properly. Deficiency of certain vitamins can result to disease and even death. Vitamins are sometimes called as “co-enzymes” because they work together with enzymes or chemical catalyst in the body.

One of these vitamins needed by the body is the vitamin B complex. These are vitamins that are very important for the proper functioning of the body, especially for the brain and the nervous system.

One of these B complex vitamins is vitamin B6 or pyridoxine. It is used in more body functions than any other vitamin. This vitamin is extremely important in the formation of body proteins and structural compounds, chemical transmitters in the nervous system, red blood cells, and prostaglandins.

Pyridoxine is needed for the proper functioning of more than 60 different enzymes in the body. It is important in maintaining hormonal balance, and proper functioning of the immune system. Vitamin B6 is needed in the absorption of vitamin B12, and in the production of hydrochloric acid. It is crucial for brain chemistry because of its involvement in the production of all amino acid neurotransmitters.

Vitamin B6 is vital in cell multiplication, and is good for the prevention of miscarriages. When combined with magnesium, it can be used to treat Parkinson’s disease. It is also useful in the prevention and treatment of asthma, cardiovascular diseases, Chinese restaurant syndrome, diabetes, kidney stones, osteoporosis, autism, carpal tunnel syndrome, epilepsy, premenstrual syndrome, and vomiting during pregnancy.

Vitamin B6 is needed in the assimilation of vitamin C, potassium and other B vitamins. For the body to be able to utilize pyridoxine, riboflavin and magnesium are required.

Vitamin B6 deficiency symptoms are mental depression, anemia, edema, halitosis, eczema, insomnia, nervousness, sore mouth and lips, kidney stones, colon inflammation, migraines, tooth decay, and premature senility.

Rich sources of pyridoxine are brewer’s yeast, torula yeast, wheat germ, whole wheat, soybeans, walnuts, lentils, bananas, brown rice, oats, peanuts, avocadoes, eggs, and sunflower seeds.

Dosage: RDA 2.2 mg; ODA 50 mg; TDA 200-500 mg. Recommended for therapeutic dosage is 50-100 mg daily. Note: The above dosages are for adults. Dosage for children 12-17 years old should be reduced to 3/4 of the recommended dose, and for children 6-11 years old, dosage is 1/2 of the recommended.

What are the Health Benefits, Source, And Dosage of Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is a wonder vitamin. It prevents a myriad of illnesses and diseases. It is a powerful antioxidant that protects against heart diseases, strokes, and cancers.

Vitamin E comes in two forms: the natural and the synthetic. Natural vitamin E is written “tocopherols” or “d-tocopherols”. Natural alpha-tocopherol, the most active form of vitamin E, is written “alpha-tocopherol” or “d-alpha-tocopherol”. The synthetic form is “tocopheryl” (with a “y”) or “dl-tocopherol” (with a “dl”). The natural form is preferred by nutritionists because it has the highest level of activity. Synthetic vitamin E is worthless. Do not use it. Another commercial form is available in drugstores: “water-soluble vitamin E”. It is more expensive, but is no more absorbable or effective than the natural form.

Vitamin E oxygenates the cells and tissues of the body, and reduces the need for oxygen. It dilates the blood vessels, and improves blood circulation. Vitamin E prevents the unsaturated fatty acids and oil-soluble vitamins from being destroyed in the body. It helps and protects the capillaries, lungs, and the reproductive organs. It also prevents the scar formation in burns.

Vitamin E is used in the treatment of heart diseases, emphysema, varicose veins, leg ulcers, angina pectoris, hypoglycemia, infertility in both male and female, and other reproductive problems. It also reduces the risk of miscarriages.

Vitamin E enters the fatty portion of the cell membranes where it protects them from the harmful effects of compounds such as mercury, lead, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, cleaning solvents, drugs, radiation, and the body’s free-radical metabolites.

A high vitamin E diet exerts strong protective effects in many health conditions. It is very important in the immune function, especially during stress and chronic viral illnesses such as AIDS and chronic viral hepatitis. It protects the thymus gland and the circulating white blood cells from damage.

Vitamin E reduces the LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein), the bad cholesterol, and increases the HDL (High Density Lipoprotein), the good cholesterol levels in our body. It is excellent in the prevention of strokes, and heart attacks.

Vitamin E protects against cancers when taken in high doses. A study showed that patients with low levels of vitamin E have 50% more risks of cancer. It also relieves hot flashes, menopausal vaginal complaints, post-menstrual symptoms, including fibrocystic breast disease.

Vitamin E deficiency symptoms are muscle weakness, nerve damage, poor coordination, involuntary movement of the eye, and breaking of the red blood cells leading to hemolytic anemia. Other symptoms are sterility, red blood cell fragility, muscular disorders, pulmonary embolism, strokes, heart diseases, coronary degeneration, testicle degeneration, fat malabsorption syndromes such as celiac diseases, cystic fibrosis, post-gastrectomy syndrome, red blood cell hereditary disorders such as sickle-cell anemia and thalassemia.

The rich sources of vitamin E are flaxseed oil, and wheat germ oil. Flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and can prevent cancer. Wheat germ oil and flaxseed oil should be fresh and cold-pressed to be more effective.

Other sources of vitamin E are soy oil, sunflower oil, unrefined cold-pressed vegetable oils, all whole raw or sprouted seeds, nuts, grains, green leafy vegetables and eggs.

Dosage: RDA 15 IU; ODA 400 IU; TDA 1,200 IU. Recommended: Normal dosage is 400-800 IU daily. This normal dosage provides a better oxidative protection for those in high-stress situations. Menopausal patients should take 800 IU daily until hot flashes subside, and then lowered to 400 IU daily. Note: The strengthening power of vitamin E is not felt until one takes at least 200-600 mg daily. (1 mg = 1.5 IU).

Caution: One study suggested that people with high blood pressure, rheumatic heart disease and other heart conditions will do best not to take more than 400-600 IU of vitamin E daily. Iron supplements, rancid foods and grains destroy vitamin E. It is better not to eat wheat germ because it easily become rancid, and it is very difficult to preserve it fresh.

What Are The Eight Secrets of Good Health?

Health is Wealth. The happiness that wealth brings cannot be fully enjoyed without health. In fact, wealth is only achievable though good health.
To have good health, we need to know the Eight Secrets of Health. The eight secrets is represented by an acronym of “NEWSTART” : Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, Air, Rest, and Trust in Divine Power.

Good nutrition is essential to good health. Food complete with carbohydrate, protein, and minerals & vitamins should be eaten regularly three times daily.

To stay fit and healthy, regular exercise is needed. Exercise enhances good blood circulation, and dissolves excess fats int the body.

Water is essential for the proper functioning of the body. The body consists 75% water, and all body organs need water. To be healthy, one should drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily.

Sunlight is very importanat to human being. We cannot exist without it. Sunlight helps our body to produce vitamin D for strong Bones and teeth.

To avoid diseases. We must practice temperance. We should avoid eating too much of anything whether healthy or not. And not only temperance when it comes to food but of habits or work as well. We should not overindulge in something.

Air is very important to us. Without air, we will perish. Fresh air invigorates the blood. Our brain also needs enough oxygen from air to function properly.

Enough rest is required to maintain good health. At least 6 to 8 hours of sleep is needed by an adult. Lack of sleep brings a lot of illnesses and diseases. Rest is needed to recharge tired bodies, and to replenish lost energies.

The best antidote to diseases is trust in the divine Lord. To trust and hope in the LORD is health to the bones and marrow. Knowing that the LORD loves us brings real joy and happiness to the heart, and “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine.”

What Are the Nutrients In Sweet Potato?

The root crops or tubers and the leaves of sweet potato contain many nutrients essential to good health. Sweet potato is three times more nutritious than white potato, and cheaper too.

Sweet potato contains carbohydrate, protein, vitamins and minerals. It is rich in iron and is good in treating anemia. The decoction of its leaves and stem is good in raising and normalizing blood platelet count in dengue patients.

Sweet potato is rich in carbohydrates. The natural sugar or glucose from carbohydrate is the main nutrient of the brain, and it also provides energy for the body. Sweet potato has a carminative effect on the body: it expels excess gas from the stomach as flatulence.

Sweet potato contains polyphenol, a powerful antioxidant to combat stress that may cause diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Besides polyphenol, sweet potato also contains vitamin A, and vitamin C which are powerful antioxidants that not only delay and reverse the process of aging but also boost the immune system to fight diseases including cancer.

Sweet potato contains potassium which is very important in the maintenance of proper acid-alkaline balance in the blood and tissues. Potassium is essential for muscle contraction, and it helps the kidney to detoxify the blood. It prevents over-acidity, which is the precursor of so many diseases.

Sweet potato is also rich in magnesium. This mineral is crucial in many bodily functions, such as cellular replication, energy production, and protein formation. It participates in more than 300 enzyme reactions in the body, and operates as a catalyst in many functions including the production of the very crucial ATP.

Zinc is also found in sweet potato. This mineral is extremely important during fetal development, where a deficiency during this period can cause premature birth, growth retardation, and low birth weight. It is needed in the formation of DNA and RNA, and in the synthesis of proteins. It is very helpful in treating Alzheimer’s disease, Wilson’s disease, macular degeneration, and acne. Zinc also prevents night blindness, hair loss, epilepsy, and osteoporosis.

Like most root crops or tubers, sweet potato contains sulfur. This mineral is needed in the formation of four amino acids: glutathione, methionine, taurine, and cysteine. Sulfur is important for healthy hair, skin and nails, and protects against the harmful effects of pollution and radiation. It disinfect the blood and protects cell protoplasm. It is also important in the utilization of oxygen by the body.

Sweet potato also contains other vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B1 (thiamin), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B3 (niacin), calcium, copper, manganese, sodium, phosphorus, aluminum and boron. The B vitamins are very important for the brain and the nervous system. Calcium and phosphorus work together to build strong bones and teeth. Sodium is an important electrolyte that works together with potassium in the proper maintenance of acid-alkaline balance in blood and tissues. Manganese aids in the formation of mother’s milk, and is involved in the reproduction and mammary gland functions. Boron prevents postmenopausal osteoporosis, enhances brain functions, and promotes alertness.

Why is Laughter The Best Medicine?

A lot of people could have been cured had they learned to laugh. More life losses could have been prevented had they laughed their problems off.

A study by Doctor Lee Berk and Doctor Stanley Tan of Loma Linda Hospital showed that laughter lowers blood pressure, produces a general well being, and boosts the immune system by raising the levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease fighting proteins called gamma interferon, and B-cells which produced disease producing antibodies. Laughter reduces stress hormones such as epinephrine, cortisol, dopac, and dopamine. It triggers the release of endorphins, the bodies natural defense against pain.

The study showed that after exposure to laughter, there is a general increase in activity within the immune system including an increase in the number of activity of bad cells that causes viral infected cells and some type of cancer and tumor cells. It was found that after exposure to humor there was an increase in activated T-cells (T-lymphocytes) also the following were noted; increase in the antibody IgA (immunoglobulin A) which fights upper respiratory tract infection, increase in gamma interferon which tells various components of the immune system to “turn on”; increase in IgB, the Immunoglobulin produced in greatest quantity in the body, and an increase in compliment free, which helps antibodies to pierce dysfunctional or infected cells.

Laughter is the best medicine. There is indeed a built-in healing mechanism that is activated when we laugh. Laughing relaxes the muscles, and brings rejuvenation to the organs of the body. Laughter has a tremendous curative power. Indeed laughter cures almost all ailments and diseases even without the aid of any medication.

What are The Health Benefits of Chlorophyll?

What is chlorophyll?

I remember coming across this word chlorophyll during my elementary school days. My teacher in Science taught us that chlorophyll is the green pigment in the leaves of plants.

Why is chlorophyll very important?

We understood chlorophyll as the green pigment in plant that is very vital in photosynthesis. We learned that plants converts carbon dioxide to organic compound such as sugar by the use of energy from sunlight, releasing oxygen as a waste product. This is the oxygen given off by plants that comprises the air we breathe to live.

What makes chlorophyll very vital in photosynthesis?

One of the two primary functions of chlorophyll is to absorb light and to transfer this light energy through resonance energy transfer to a specific chlorophyll pair in the reaction center of the photosystems. Photosystems are pigment proteins embedded in thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts in plants. It is in and around these pigment proteins that chlorophyll molecules are specifically arranged.

Chloroplasts are organelles in plant cells that conduct photosynthesis. It is this chloroplast that captures light energy to conserve free energy in the form of ATP, and reduce NADP to NADPH through photosynthesis. In the stroma of chloroplasts are stacks of thylakoid membranes where this photosynthesis takes place.

Why is chlorophyll green?

The color of chlorophyll is due to its selectivity in the absorption of light wavelengths from sunlight. Chlorophyll absorbs more strongly the blue and the red of the electromagnetic spectrum, and less of the green, thus the green color of chlorophyll-containing tissues such as plant leaves.

What is so important about chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is not only vital in the process of photosynthesis, but is also very essential to our health. The molecular structure of chlorophyll is almost similar to hemin of the hemoglobin of human blood. Scientists noted that the chemical composition of chlorophyll is similar to that of the human blood. The only difference of chlorophyll and the hemin is their central component: chlorophyll has magnesium at its center, while hemin has iron. Scientists found out that the magnesium in chlorophyll is converted to iron during assimilation in the body, and they are unable to explain why.

Chlorophyll has many health benefits. It is a rich source of vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Chlorophyll contains minerals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, selenium, zinc, calcium, and iron. Chlorophyll contains 17 amino acids. It has antioxidants that neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals in the body.

Chlorophyll is a powerful liver detoxifier. It cleanses and purifies the blood. Chlorophyll has anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. It was found out in some studies that chlorophyll has anti-carcinogenic properties, and may be used to treat liver cancer and other forms of cancer.

The following are the other health benefits of chlorophyll:

it removes toxic heavy metals in the body

it cleanses the digestive tract

it lowers high blood pressure

it lowers blood sugar level

it eliminates bad breath, and reduces the odors of urine, feces, and wounds

it increases oxygen utilization by the body

it rebuilds , replenishes, and increases the red blood cells in the body

it blocks the metabolism of harmful toxins that can damage DNA

it breaks down calcium oxalates or kidney stones for elimination

The health benefits of chlorophyll are indeed many. Besides strengthening and boosting the immune system, chlorophyll cleanses the body at the cellular level. The health benefits of chlorophyll disprove the unfounded allegation that a vegetarian diet is deficient in vitamin B12, and vegetarians are anemic and sickly.

Spirulina and some seaweeds are good sources of vitamin B12, and vegetables rich in cobalt help the body to produce its own vitamin B12. The magnesium in chlorophyll itself is converted to iron during assimilation, and helps rebuild, replenish and increase the red blood cells in the body.

With the nutritious chlorophyll in green leafy vegetables, we can safely say that a vegetarian diet is the best diet for man. It is not only complete and balanced, but safer and healthy too.
