Lecithin is derived from soybeans. It cosists primarily of choline, plus linoleic acid and inositol. Lecithin is a type of lipid needed by every cells in the body. It is important in the brain and the whole nnervous system, where it coats the nerve fibers.

Commercial lecithin contains 10 to 20 percent phosphatidylcholine. The newer preparations contain up to 98 percent, and are the best ones to use when large doses are required to treat some diseases.

Lecithin is very good for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and arteriosclerosis. It improves the brain functions, and is one of the substances that enhance intelligence.

Lecithin helps in the absorption of thiamine by the liver and vitamin A by the intestines. It is good for the repair of damaged liver caused alcoholism. Lecithin’s most important function is its ability to enable fats to dissolve and disperse in water, so that they can be removed from the body.

Lecithin, like gingko biloba and gotu kola, is a super brain food. It dissolves cholesterosl that clog the arteries, veins and capillaries, thus promoting good blood circulation to the brain to supply it with needful glucose and oxygen. Taken together with vitamin E, lecithin is good for the heart. Lecithin, like vitamin E and ginseng has a rejuvenating and anti-aging properties.

Vitamin B12: Health Benefits, Source, And Dosage

The body needs vitamins to function properly. Deficiency of certain vitamins can result to disease and even death. Vitamins are sometimes called as “co-enzymes” because they work together with enzymes or chemical catalyst in the body.

One of these vitamins needed by the body is the vitamin B complex. These are vitamins that are very important for the proper functioning of the body, specially for the brain and the nervous system.

One of these B complex is vitamin B12 or cobalamin. This vitamin is present in animal products, and rarely in vegetables, if ever, and only in very minimal amount. It is needed in the production of red blood cells. It prevents anemia, and promotes growth in children. Vitamin B12 is used in the treatment of impaired mental ability in the elderly. It is also used in the treatment of depression, diabetic neuropathy, low sperm count, tinnitus, multiple sclerosis, and asthma.

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms are chronic fatigue, difficulty in concentrating, sore mouth, numbness or stiffness, pernicious anemia, depression, pins-and-needles sensation, and a mimic Alzheimer’s effect in the elderly. Lack of vitamin B12 affects the brain and the nervous system first, and is also the major cause of depression in older people. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes an undersupply of melatonin, resulting in inadequate sleep at night.

Vitamin B12 and folic acid work closely together; they should be taken together to be more effective. In order for the body to be able to absorb vitamin B12, the stomach secretes an “intrinsic factor”, a special digestive secretion that increases the absorption of vitamin B12 in the small intestine. When there is enough cobalt in the body, the bowel can make its own vitamin B12.

There are two forms of vitamin B12 – methylcobalamin (the active form), and cyanocobalamin. The active form is preferred than the other.

Rich source of vitamin B12 are fortified brewer’s yeast, milk, and egg. It can be found also in some vegetables but rarely, and in very small amount.

Dosage: RDA 3mcg; ODA 200 mcg; TDA 1,000 mcg. Recommended dosage is 2 mcg daily. For pernicious anemia, dosage is 300-1,000 mcg. Therapeutic doses is difficult to assimilate, so doctors give it by injection. The above dosages are for adults. Dosage for children 12-17 years old should be reduced to 3/4 of the recommended dose, and for children 6-11 years old, dosage is 1/2 of the recommended.

Caution: Be cautious in taking B12 if you have folate deficiency, iron deficiency, any kind of infections, Leber’s disease, polycythemia or uremia.

When your child is prepared to eat solid food, it’s very exciting because you feel like your child progresses to a new stage. This is the point however that we start to have dilemma on what food is safe when it comes to feeding babies that often, most especially first time parents, get a little nervous. This is also the time when we start buying ready to eat baby food and also plan on cooking homemade baby food to save from buying expensive readily prepared food.

Actually, preparing baby food is very simple compared to preparing food for the entire family. There is no need to have ample of ingredients or any special cooking equipments. You often only need a blender, osterizer, or any food processor. You only need basic foods that will provide the baby with their basic recommended dietary allowance. And although the baby is ready to eat solid foods, breastfeeding should be continued.

Usually, pediatricians advice children had better reach 4 and 6 months prior to beginning to feed them with solids. Rice food grain and cereal are often chosen by parents as first solid food to feed their babies. although others prepare wheat cereal, rice cereal is cheaper and readily available. Most babies are also able to tolerate it. If it is your first time feeding your baby with solid food, always ask your baby doctor first.

It is always most effective to feed your baby with one new food at a time, this is best practiced to determine whether your child has an allergic reaction to certain foods. This way, it will make it easier to determine which exact food has caused the allergic reaction.

The best food that can provide your baby is your own milk. It helps in strengthening their immune system and keep them away from diseases. No commercially processed baby food or milk can match the nutrition your breast milk can provide. More moms are opting to breastfeed their babies. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics advocates at least twelve months of breast feeding, but there are moms who often find this job hard, most especially when things starts to become a discomfort. A mom should be prepared to do breastfeeding, this means that even during pregnancy one can consult a lactation expert so you will have an idea on what to do.And if ever you are already breastfeeding your baby and is experiencing problems, better consult the doctor immediately to receive an advice.

If there’s one thing to keep in mind that is to nurse early and as often as your baby needs to be breastfed. Frequent breastfeeding in the early months serves a lot in making sure that your baby gets the necessary nutrition. Also learn proper positioning when breastfeeding to avoid discomfort for yourself and your baby. Get cozy by using pillows that you can place behind your back while leaning against a chair or wall, and also use pillows where you can place on your thighs to support your baby, it will also help lift up your baby so you do not need to lean over and hunch your shoulders. The best and most advised position is to keep baby facing you, with his tummy against your tummy.

Try to avoid introducing a pacifier during his early months or bottlefeed your baby early. Some babies are able to switch back and forth from breastfeeding to bottle-feeding easily, but there are some who find it hard to adjust therefore refuse either of the two when switching. It is also important for a mother to learn and be comfortable to bottle-feed in public because babies often get hungry and you will have to feed them wherever you may be and whatever you are doing, even if you are outside shopping for groceries, or traveling. Having a baby sling carrier and wearing a nursing bra will help a lot ion making breastfeeding in public easier.

Family Health. One of the major concerns of a mom is the entire family’s health. From the youngest ones, to the old folks at home, it is always necessary that one has the knowledge on how to deal with certain situations that concerns the health of an immediate family member.

Kids health matters more than anything, because our young ones are helpless, and they only rely on the adult’s knowledge when it comes to taking care and looking after their health and medical needs.

A wise mom must be equipped not only with first aid kits, but also how to use them just in case of emergencies. A wise mom must know which medicines can be given with or without prescription. A wise mom should know each and every kid’s or family member’s allergies and other serious medical conditions, so she can provide the immediate cure, just in case any problem occurs at any given time.

A wise mom, should always put Family Health first, before anything.

Herbal Medications For Asthma

Asthma is a respiratory disease of the bronchial tubes or airways. Its symptoms are feeling of tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. Breathlessness is caused by the narrowing of the bronchioles (small air passages in the lungs). An asthma attack can be triggered by an allergen to which a patient is abnormally sensitive. These include airborne pollen, mold, and dust. Attacks can also be triggered by physical exercise, emotional stress, cold air, inhalation of cigarrette smoke, noxious fumes from gasolines and paints. It can also be triggered by viral infection in the respiratory tract.

There is no known permanent cure for asthma. Attacks can be prevented by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, such as cromolyn sodium and corticosteroids. Drugs that relax and widen the air passages such as albuterol and epinephrine can provide fast relief.

There are other temporary cure for asthma: water treatment, breathing exercises, and some herbal medications. Water treatment includes fomentation on the chest twice a day, and steam inhalation, also done twice a day. Breathing exercises for 10 to 15 minutes 4 times a day, and must be done only when there is no attack.

Sit relax on a chair. Support the back with a pillow. Breathe in through the nose. Purse the lips and pretend you are blowing through a straw. Blow twice as long as you breathe in, and gradually increase the time of blowing. Relax after blowing. Take 3 to 4 normal breaths before starting the pursed breathing again. Do this exercise upon waking up in the morning, and before retiring in the evening.

The following herbal medications can also be used to relieve an asthma attack:

Roll 2 dried leaves of thorn apple or talumpunay, and use as cigarette stick every 6 hours.

Roll 2 dried leaves of graveyard tree or kalatsutsi, and use as a cigarette stick one in the morning, and one in the evening.

Chop and boil one-foot long bark of tamarind tree in 3 glasses of water for 10 minutes. Adults must drink 1 cup every after meal, and at bedtime. Dosage for children is 2 teaspoons every after meal and at bedtime.

Boil 5 chopped young stems with flowers and leaves of amaranth or kulitis in 5 glasses of water for 10 minutes. Dosage for adults is 1 cup, 4 times a day; and for children, 1/2 cup, 4 times a day. This treatment is good for excessive mucus discharge.

Most people have sleeping problem, and they do not know how to tackle it. This is the problem of modern-day man. The sophisticated inventions of modern technology has kept him awake almost 24 hours a day.

Many books have been written on how to combat this sleeping problem. Millions of dollars are spent on sleeping pills, vitamins and minerals to solve this sleeping problem to no avail.

What really causes sleeplessness or insomnia? Is there a way out of it? What must I do to have a good night sleep?

Like most ailments and maladies that plagued humanity today, 90% of the cause of insomnia is found in our mind. When our mind is full of fear, hatred, and other negative thoughts, we will have problems to rob us of restful sleep. So let us be at peace with all men, and enjoy that sweet slumber that only God can give to every righteous man.

Manage your sleep just like how you manage your work. If you are good at material handling and doing your job according to rules and instructions, it won’t be a hard thing to follow simple steps to assure yourself a good rest and sound sleep. First, avoid coffee and other food and drinks that have coffee in it. Coffee is a proven cause of sleeplessness. Avoid drugs too; they affect the nervous system, and destroy the wake-sleep cycle of our body.

Eat your dinner 2 to 3 hours before going to bed. Eat light meal at dinner. Overeating at night will not only taxed your digestive system, and deprive you of sleep, but it can cause nightmares that may cause death.

When you have problem sleeping at night, take some light physical exercises, such as walking and stretching. Deep breathing and meditation are also good in inducing good sleep.

Take a warm bath before going to bed. It opens up our skin pores to breathe out the pollutants and toxins on our skin, and refreshes our whole body to induce a good sound sleep.

Put the lights off when sleeping at night. Darkness stimulates the secretion of melatonin in the brain. This hormone regulates the circadian rhythms of our body such as the wake-sleep cycle. To avail of this health benefit of melatonin, we should go to bed before 10 o’clock in the evening, when the melatonin production is at its peak.

And of course, we should sleep in a quiet place away from the distractions of TV and other noise. It is very important that we sleep in clean, well-ventilated room with clean bedding, pillows and blankets. Foul-smelling bedding, blanket and dirty room are not conducive to sound sleep. Open up the windows, and allow fresh air to enter into the room for a healthful sound sleep

Strengthen your heart with CoQ10 and live longer!

I started to learn about CoQ10 in the late 1990′s from a man to whom I was trying to sell books about health. He was a strong old man who introduced me to this herbal product which he said is a powerful cure for various diseases including cancer. I was not interested then; all I wanted was to sell health and spiritual books to earn money for my family. Besides, it was so expensive – a medium bottle cost almost two thousand pesos!

I read amazing testimonies of people who were cured of crippling diseases by taking CoQ10. More people get well, and this herbal medicine became popular in more places as a cure of many diseases. I thought it was just a fad and will soon fade away. I was wrong – it is making a comeback and more popular this time.

Recently, somebody sent me a health newsletter about CoQ10. The facts about its health benefits are so amazing to believe. If it were not for the medical doctors who vouched its efficacy and safety, plus the enumerable convincing positive results of various studies done on CoQ10, it would be hard for me to believe.

CoQ10 is an amazing nutrient! It is the energy switch that sparks the more than 100 trillion cells in our body. It is naturally produced by our body in the liver, and its main user is our heart, which uses up to 10 times more compared to the other organs of the body. This production of CoQ10 is normal in children, but as we grow older, at about the age of 30, our body’s production of CoQ10 decreases gradually. Deficiency of CoQ10 in our body can weaken our immune system and makes us more susceptible to many diseases.

CoQ10 has lots of health benefits. It normalizes and restore our blood pressure, help prevent memory loss, and repair damaged cells. It protects the body from free radical oxidation that damages body cells and cause premature aging.

The reduction of CoQ10 natural production in the body is not only caused by old age. Cholesterol-lowering drugs or statins used by weight-loss fads also reduce the body’s production of CoQ10 by as much as 40 percent! People with 25% fall of CoQ10 level in the body can experience illness, and 75% is fatal. Lower levels of CoQ10 in the body can cause premature aging, memory loss, chest pains, irregular heartbeat, and other heart problems.

CoQ10 is indeed an amazing nutrient for the body! It floods the cells with endless energy! It unclogs the arteries of fats and bad cholesterol, improving and boosting blood circulation to all organs in the body to restore healthy body function such as as memory, normal heart beats, and to protect the body from free radical oxidation caused by pollutants and stress that leads to many diseases and premature aging.

Ginger is a flowering herb that thrives in Southeast Asia. There are more than 85 species of ginger. The most common ginger is 2 to 3 feet tall with thick fleshly roots. Ginger is a herb without equal dealing with sea sickness, air sickness, and other kind of motion sickness. It has aromatic, diuretic, carminative, stimulant, and diaphoretic properties.

Ginger is also good for coughs, cramps, indigestion, headaches, spasms of the colon, nausea, sinus congestion, morning sickness, and stomach spasm. When taken regularly, it makes the skin healthy, clear, and shiny. Ginger is also used to relieve the hoarseness of voice, and to improve it.

Talking about improving one’s voice, I’ll be preparing ginger tea for my daughter who will be singing in a wedding next week. We got the wedding invitations pretty late so she has less time to prepare. She’ll be practicing a lot, so she will need a lot of help from ginger tea to help relax and sooth her throat. If you haven’t tried it yet, better try it soon, you’ll see what wonders the ginger tea can do for you.
